The employees and pensioners of the central government are about to get an increased Dearness Allowance (DA) / Dearness Relief (DR) for the next six months of the year 2025, which will be valid for the period July-December 2025. There have been rumors that the percentage will increase from 55 % of the basic pay/pension to 58 %, which is a rise of 3 percentage points. This increase is going to be the last one pre-scheduled under the 7th Pay Commission before the transition to the 8th Pay Commission occurs.
Reasons Behind the Hike
The hike has been supported by the data on inflation: the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) escalated to 143.5 in April 2025, indicating price levels having come back to life after the earlier stagnation. According to the method of DA growth under the 7th Pay Commission—based on the 12-month average of CPI-IW—this little bump has increased the hopes of the 3 % move. Moreover, as the 7th Pay Commission’s duration ends on December 31, 2025, this hike is regarded as the last correction prior to the next major salary revision.
What Would Be the Gain of Employees and Pensioners?
An employee who is getting the minimum basic pay of ₹ 18,000 will receive an additional ~₹ 540 per month in allowance due to his DA being raised from 55 % to 58 %. The same will be the case for pensioners who get the minimum pension, as their DR will go up accordingly—thereby increasing their monthly income. The extra amount might appear to be small, but the timing—just before the festive season—and the fact that it is the last increase under this Pay Commission, make it important for many beneficiaries.
Effective Date, Arrears & What to Watch
The 1st of July 2025 marks the official date for the increase, yet the government notification is expected to take place later—usually around September or October, often prior to festivals. Workers can anticipate receiving the arrears (from July onward) together with the regular salary/pension as soon as the notification is made. Making KYC, bank details and payroll records correct will assist in smooth processing.
