The Income Tax Department has come up with a significant improvement to its e-filing portal, which allows the taxpayers to keep track of their filed Income Tax Returns(ITRs) along with the information of the assessing officer or the commissioner who accessed their return. This new feature greatly enhances transparency about the processing of tax returns and gives the users real-time updates about their case.
How The Tracking Works & Why It Matters
After the ITR is filed through the portal, you will be able to log in to the system and see information like the date and time when your return was registered in the officer’s system, whether it is still being checked or if any action (issuing notice or asking questions) is being taken. This is a significant improvement over previous systems which left the taxpayers guessing about their status most of the time, causing insecurity. The upside is that you would have a clearer picture of the timelines and hence could plan your activities accordingly, e.g., when to expect a refund or when to prepare for a query response.
What It Means for Taxpayers
Improved accountability: Now it is very easy for the taxpayers to check their return status causing the process to feel less like a “black-box”.
- Faster redressal: The state of your application being visible puts the users in a better position to report through the grievance channels any delays or omissions.
- Reduced anxiety: If one knows that the return has been entered and when then it can easily eliminate any doubt concerning refunds or assessments.
- Preparedness: One would gain early awareness and thus be able to gather documents or engage a tax advisor at the right time, if there is a query or notice pending.
Steps To Use The Feature
- Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal using your username and password.
- Go to the “My Account / Returns & Forms” section.
- Search for your most recent ITR and see if there is a new “Tracking” or “Status” tab.
- Take note of the time when the action was entered and any related tasks.
- Should you notice that there has been a long delay with no visible progress, either reach out to the helpdesk or file the issue through the “Compliance Portal”.
